The Pantagraph declared Haley A as Bloomington-Normal's "Best Photographer" in 2017
BLOOMINGTON'S BEST WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER
I'll admit, when I first started considering working full-time in the wedding photography business, I was hesitant. Doing so meant leaving a job I loved at Cybernautic, and it meant taking a step out in faith that things would work out.
So far, the journey has been more memorable and more humbling than I've ever thought possible. When Bloomington's long-standing newspaper, The Pantagraph, declared Haley A as Bloomington-Normal's "best photographer" in 2017, I couldn't believe my eyes (at least partially because my vision was a little blurred from tears).
One of my favorite wedding photography shoots happened right here in Bloomington IL, at Illinois Wesleyan University's Ames Library, as I captured the wedding of Erica and Corey, who have become dear friends of mine.
I first met Erica during their maternity session in Winter of 2016. Corey and I are third cousins and went to high school together. Their beautiful daughter, Aria, was a blessing to behold.
Their gorgeous wedding day was filled with love and laughter from their large bridal party, wonderful family, and sweet little girl. It was an honor to photograph such a beautiful union, and it made me love my job as a wedding photographer in Bloomington IL all the more.

LEARN MORE ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHY: 3 Variables to proper photo shoots
As a client or an aspiring photographer, I hope you find this page of use. If you're a client, I hope the below section will give you a better grasp of what goes into the wedding photography process. I'll walk through some popular techniques and the necessary equipment for every photography shoot.
It's imperative that a modern photographer have a DSLR. Upper-tier, full-frame DSLRs such as the Canon EOS 5D Mark III, Nikon D810, and Nikon D750 are the cameras of choice for most experienced wedding photographers.
Almost as important as the type of camera used is its backup. Part of photography is being foolproof, meaning nothing can go wrong that would stop us from recording that day.
For lenses, especially in wedding photography, they need to do two different things: enable the photographer to shoot wide and shoot far. The usual choice photographers have to make is whether to go with zoom lenses or prime lenses (fixed focal-length lenses).
Wide-aperture lenses allow you to shoot in low light at lower ISOs and higher shutter speeds for better image quality, but they also deliver shallower depth of field. Fast zooms and prime lenses are the mainstays of veteran wedding photographers and emerging pros.
Some call the 24-70mm f/2.8 lens the "Wedding Lens" as its effective for capturing the entire wedding party as its members witness the event, the bride and groom at the altar, close-ups, detail shots, and formal full-length portraits. Its wide aperture provides brighter viewing in darker environments and allows you to create artistic effects with beautiful bokeh.
Wide-angle zooms are crucial for shooting groups, the chapel setting with all the guests in attendance, and capturing important moments on the dance floor including the first dance.
Macro lenses are great for capturing telling details in rings, dresses, couture, and floral arrangements. Telephoto macro lenses in the range can also do double duty as portrait lenses.
Fisheye lenses let you capture unique images that set your work apart. You may not use them for more than a few shots, but a surprising percentage of them wind up in the wedding albums or portfolios.
Photographers won't always have ideal lighting. Not every wedding is going to have the perfect outdoor ceremony followed by the perfectly lit reception. Basically, if a photographer walks out the door without any lighting, then he cannot shoot in any situation.
Ideally, a photographer should have two or three flashes and be able to shoot off-camera using a light stand, umbrella, and flash triggers. Just pointing the flash straight at your subject is not going to cut it. A photographer will have to bounce in multiple directions (left, right, up, back) and use the flash as a subtle fill in certain situations.
Using an external flash can be a lifesaver when it's getting too dark to get the perfect shot. I have to use speedlight photography techniques for nighttime weddings and dark churches. The alternative is dark or grainy images.
At the end of the day, even the best equipment cannot make up for a lack of skill. That's why you pay for professional photographers, and that's why you often get what you pay for.
WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER IN BLOOMINGTON-NORMAL IL
I’ve always had an eye for the natural moments, and I've always sought to create something unique in every single shoot I do. I don't want to be "just another" photographer - I want to be the #1 Bloomington photographer.
Poses and artificial candids are nice and all, but you can’t quite get the same sincerity - the same glimmer in her eyes, the same warmth in his smile. I love to watch the day unfold organically, which allows me to capture otherwise forgettable moments - the innocent laughs, the silly faces couples make when they think no one is watching, the moments that make a couple unique - in addition to the big, “gotta have ‘em” moments.
My three words: authentic, intimate, timeless. If I can make my clients forget I’m there, I’ve succeeded.
My career as has been a blessing. I’ve experienced ineffable beauty and love. I’ve seen the beginnings of many happy marriages, many of them in an intimate setting or an exotic destination.
Who better to capture your special moments than someone local, someone who knows the hidden gems that only the Bloomington area has to offer? I’ve lived in the area for my whole life, and this area continues to impress me.
